A project namely “Registration of Geographical Indications” to facilitate the stakeholders in protecting their Intellectual Property Rights, was launched by former Commerce & Investment Department, Government of the Punjab in 2007. This is one of the many endeavors which the Government of Punjab has put together for improvement of marketing opportunities of private sector. Province of Punjab is proud of its heritage and the Government has never hesitated in working with the private sector to enhance economic activities and safeguarding its interests. The government is committed to provide an enabling environment to stakeholders in view of the emerging developments under the WTO regime.

Focus of the project is to protect, preserve, safeguard and promote the heritage of Punjab. Its main objectives are to identify GIs of Punjab, to create awareness among the stakeholders through seminars, to form and register the associations of the stakeholders for protection of their respective product/commodity under Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance 1984, to file applications for registration of identified GIs as Collective / Certification Marks with the Trade Marks Registrar (TMR), Government of Pakistan, Karachi / Lahore & provide guidance for production, marketing, development and protection of the GIs of Punjab.

Six associations have been established and registered for the purpose i.e. Basmati Growers, Guava Growers, Multan Mango Growers, Kinnow Growers, Livestock Farmers and Breeders & the Heritage Association. Eleven GIs applications have been filed with the TMR by these organizations.

Four (4) applications for Registration of Geographical Indications i.e. i). kinnow of Sargodha, ii). Multan Mango, iii). Sharqpur Guava & vi). phulkari (Heritage) have been published in trade mark General 2013 in December 2012 and the opposition field are also under process as per law. It is hoped that these will be registered after completing the codal formalities.

The Registration of Geographical Indications Project shall continue to assist protecting the important products of various sectors of the provincial economy. The project would achieve its desired goals as it proceeds further and the benefits reach to the people involved in producing such goods. The project shall also guide others across the country if needed. Any proposal / suggestion to improve the working of the project shall highly be appreciated.
