Message from Mr. Nasir Rafique, Chief WTO / Project Director Geographical Indications (G.Is) Industries Commerce & Investment Department, IC&I, Govt. of the Punjab.
Geographical Indications (also known as Collective / Certification Marks) identify a good originating in the territory of a country, or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristics of the goods is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.
Geographical Indications (GIs) is type of a Intellectual Property which helps in promotion and commercialization of indigenous products. A large number of entrepreneurs all over the world are successfully running over their businesses based on GIs products and contributing in development of their national economies.
In Pakistan, we are in need of systematic arrangements for protection and commercialization of Geographical Indications by identification of GIs; development of databases; formation of right holders associations; establishment of certifying bodies; registration at national and international level; and commercialization of GIs as economic tools.
The first step is identification of GIs and development of database. Various Seminars / workshops have been conducted with the coordination of Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan, Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) & Chambers of Commerce & Industry to give awareness regarding GIs in different areas of the province i.e. Punjab, Pakistan. After series of seminars a survey has also been conducted under the Registration of Geographical Indications Project of IC&I Department, PSIC and with the technical assistance of IPO-Pakistan to collect information from indigenous people who are directly involved in production / manufacturing of GIs in their local areas. The identified GIs will be included in the GIs database to be disseminated at national & international level.
I must pay special thanks to Dr. Shujat Ali, Secretary, Industries, Commerce & Investment Department for extending his un-matched support / guidance at every step. I am also grateful to IPO-Pakistan and especially Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Deputy Director IPO-Pakistan, for their cooperation at all levels in visiting far flung areas such as Bahawalpur, Multan, Sargodha, Rawalpindi during awareness amongst stakeholders and holding seminars / workshops.
